Phrase It® is a card game that builds word recognition and reading fluency by using the most common words (high frequency) in phrases. Designed by our Level 7 course tutor Marlene Caplan.

The words used in Phrase It® come from a brand new data set comprising 1,200 books (70 million words) called The Children and Young People’s Books Lexicon (CYP-LEX): A large-scale lexical database of books read by children and young people in the United Kingdom (Sage Publications, 2024) It is the most comprehensive and up-to-date word list of its kind. It updates and extends earlier word lists (e.g. Letters and Sounds, Fry’s Word List, Dolce Word List).
