Primary Education Programme

Down Syndrome UK Stand: B55

Our Primary Education Programme supports primary schools working with pupils with Down syndrome. This programme runs each school year and includes:

  • Support: Regular online sessions with experts highly experienced in working with children with Down syndrome, and the opportunity to meet and share ideas with other schools.
  • Training. A CPD accredited online course for those working in the classroom which covers: the learning strengths of pupils with Down syndrome, strategies to promote inclusive practices, and guidance around differentiating the curriculum. In addition, a training video for all staff is included to help establish a successful school team.
  • Information: Access to practical information sessions and videos covering a range of education and health needs including developing literacy and numeracy, supporting hearing and vision difficulties, as well as supporting friendships and positive behaviour.
  • Resources: Resources for schools including practical activities and examples to support learning across the curriculum as well as tools to target and measure individual progress.

This programme is led by Down Syndrome UK's Director of Education and Speech and Language Therapy, Dr Rebecca Baxter. Becky has over 15 years experience of working with schools and families, supporting school staff to successfully teach and support pupils with Down syndrome. Becky previously led a team of specialist teachers providing school outreach to pupils with Down syndrome across Hampshire. We are excited to bring this experience and knowledge online and be able to offer support to schools that do not have access to specialist services locally.

The programme aims to give schools training, information and access to professionals across a range of topics relevant to pupils with Down syndrome. School staff can ask any questions/seek advice on specific topics/issues e.g., communication, differentiation, behaviour. There will be a bank of resources providing theory and practical strategies to implement in the classroom.

Access to the programme costs £100 per setting where there is one child in the setting who has Down syndrome. (Additional children at the setting charged at £75 per child). Please click the button below to book on to the programme - you will need to register on the DSUK School Portal to join and access the programme.
