‘Belonging’ Exploring the Importance of emotional wellbeing and relational practice
This workshop explores the recent Government White Paper through a relational lens, with a particular focus on its recognition of belonging as a core foundation for learning, attendance and pupil engagement. Drawing on theory and research, the session examines belonging as a fundamental human need and explores its significance for school culture, inclusion and positive outcomes for children and young people.
The workshop also considers the relationship between belonging and key issues facing schools and local authorities, including Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA), exclusion, attendance, and the disproportionate experiences of some groups of pupils. Participants will explore how a relational approach can strengthen inclusive practice and support leaders in providing effective strategic challenge and accountability.
