Designing the room: what the environment must do for SEND
Support for SEND is physical before anything else — the room, the materials within reach, a place to regulate. A ‘calm classroom’ isn’t enough. Mykhailo Kalitkin, founder of UNOWA, offers a practical framework for designing spaces around what they must enable: predictability, sensory and emotional regulation, independence, participation and safe transitions. He shows how observations about one learner become concrete choices — seating, lighting, noise, movement and communication. See MIKKO on Stand C50.
