We often talk about inclusion, but being present is not the same as having genuine access. In this thought-provoking session, Lisa Pinkerton explores why some of our most vulnerable learners continue to face significant barriers despite the best intentions of schools and settings. Drawing on experience across mainstream, specialist and alternative provision, she examines how hidden communication, language and learning needs can impact participation, belonging and achievement. The session will also challenge delegates to consider whether those with the greatest needs consistently have access to the most specialist expertise, and what happens when vulnerability is met with support rather than understanding. Delegates will leave with practical, evidence-informed approaches to creating accessible environments where expectations remain high, expertise is targeted where it is needed most, and every learner has the opportunity to succeed.
