Grow to School CIC Launches SEND-Focused Outdoor Learning Resources Creating Accessible Nature-Based Learning for All Abilities

Grow to School CIC, a leader in outdoor education since 2011, is proud to announce the expansion of its resources to better support students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). With the introduction of a SEND Package within its Growbag Toolkits and the launch of a Free Resources Page, the organisation is committed to making outdoor learning inclusive, accessible, and engaging for all students.

The Growbag Toolkits, available in Early Years and Primary versions, now feature a specialised SEND Package designed to meet the diverse needs of SEND learners. The package includes activities divided into three developmental stages:

  1. Engagement Model – Activities for children working below the level of the national curriculum and not yet engaged in subject-specific learning. These sensory-rich activities encourage exploration and connection with nature at an individualised pace.
  2. Pre-Key Stage 1 – Tailored for children working below the national curriculum level but engaged in subject-specific learning, providing structured, hands-on gardening and nature-based activities that promote understanding and sensory engagement.
  3. Further Exploration – For children ready to extend their learning, offering deeper exploration of nature and more advanced gardening projects, building on foundational skills.

These multi-sensory activities are designed to ensure that all children can experience the joy of nature, regardless of ability. Activities are seasonal, hands-on, and adaptable to various learning styles, helping to develop physical coordination, social interaction, and a connection with the environment.

In addition to the SEND Package, Grow to School’s Free Resources Page provides accessible gardening guides, lesson plans, and outdoor activities, empowering teachers to bring outdoor learning into their classrooms, even with limited resources or outdoor space.

“Outdoor learning is for every child, and that includes those with additional needs,” said Zaa Wood, Founding Director & Outdoor learning practitioner at Grow to School CIC. “Our SEND Package is designed to remove barriers, ensuring that students of all abilities can learn, explore, and thrive in outdoor spaces.”

Research shows that nature-based learning enhances cognitive, sensory, and emotional development, particularly for SEND students. Grow to School is dedicated to building inclusive learning environments where every child can grow, connect, and discover the world around them.
