Twinkl Helps Educators Close the Attainment Gap with New Symbols App
Nasen-accredited Twinkl Symbols resources boost communication skills for learners with SEND
London, UK, October 11th 2024: To better support learners with SEND, Twinkl has today added the new Twinkl Symbols app to its existing Twinkl Symbols platform - a range of complementing tools and resources designed to give learners with SEND an alternative way to communicate through visuals, in everyday situations.
According to a recent Department for Education (DfE) report, over 1.6 million pupils in England have special educational needs. Of these, one in four pupils have speech, language and communication as their primary need (25.6%).
“Given the sheer number of pupils and adult learners that require language and communication-related special education support, there are too few accessible and affordable resources available,” said Twinkl’s Chief Education Officer, and former SENCO teacher, Helen Fulson. “Twinkl Symbols has been created to address this. From the resource library to the new intuitive app, Twinkl Symbols gives end users - as well as teachers, parents and carers - all the content and tools they require to provide tailored support for all learner needs.”
Twinkl Symbols is the only Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) solution to have Nasen-assured accreditation in the UK. Available via the Twinkl website, the Symbols suite includes:
-
Symbols Resources: includes a vast range of ready-made symbolised resources linked to curriculum areas and day-to-day situations that allow teachers, parents and carers to quickly and affordably access content for specific SEND requirements.
-
Symbols Web Tool: allows educators to create bespoke resources online, leveraging thousands of symbols, illustrations and templates, with simple edit, save, share and print options.
-
Symbols App: designed for use by learners with SEND, the freely available app provides customisable Twinkl Symbols resources and digital functionalities like text-to-speech audio, on-the-go, via Android and iOS devices - including iPad, iPhone and Apple Watch.
