Built for Connection: Transforming Practice with Young People with Learning Disabilities and/or Autism and No Spoken Communication.
This seminar explores how to build trusting, meaningful relationships with young people with learning disabilities and/or autism who do not use speech.
Despite knowing that the importance of connection and the universal need for relationship, occasionally we meet a child who appears to be the exception the rule: a child who doesn't use speech and doesn't much like physical proximity, eye contact, or, seemingly, even interaction. It can feel like the best response is to leave them be.
But we cannot learn if we do not feel safe, and safety comes through relationship. So learning how to build safety through connection, through shifting our assumptions and communication practices, is our best hope for helping non-speaking children to find the foundation for learning again and reach their potential.
