Diagnostic Assessment – The Key to successful Maths Remediation

11 Oct 2025
Cognition and learning

How do we plan a maths support programme for a new student?  To start students on the journey to success, their first specialist lessons need to be positive and engaging while revealing the gaps in foundational knowledge. Diagnostic tests incorporating hands-on activities and focused games will enable teachers to assess which maths concepts are secure and those in need of support, crucially allowing them to listen to their students’ explanations.

By the end of this session, you should be able to:

•    Understand the significance of diagnostic assessments
•    Realise that SEND students know more than they demonstrate in written assessments
•    Recognise that listening to spoken explanations will reveal mathematical misconceptions
•    Appreciate how important confidence is for learning maths

Why attend this session?

Did you know that assessment for maths can fun as well as informative? Find out how you can bring a little joy to maths to engage students and your interaction with them.
