Language and Literacy; spoken language foundations of text comprehension

12 Oct 2024
Communication and interaction

There are well evidenced links between development of spoken language and literacy. For children who struggle with text comprehension, the foundation of their difficulties can often be found in spoken language; they struggle with verbal comprehension, which impacts on their understanding of texts.

This session explores the evidence behind the language / literacy links, the gaps in spoken language that can impact on literacy and strategies to support children’s understanding.
