Refreshing the Graduated Approach

11 Oct 2025
Aspiring SENCO Policy & Guidance

The Graduated Approach has become monopolised as a procedural requirement to facilitate the collection of multiple cycles of evidence to demonstrate a child’s lack of progress. This session will explore how schools can reassess and refresh their use of the Graduated Approach and unleash its potential to transform thinking in the classroom and across the entire school workforce, as well as strategically rethinking its broader applications to enhance outcomes for children with SEND.

By the end of this session you should be able to:

•    Explore how the application of the Graduated Approach may have become limited.
•    Ensure all staff understand the solution focused, iterative nature of the Graduated Approach in day-to-day classroom practices.
•    Consider how the Graduated Approach can be utilised within broader sys-tems to enhance inclusion.

Why attend this session?

Reclaim and refresh the Graduated Approach (GA) to be the engine that drives your SEND strategy and day to day practice. Find out how, when used effectively, the GA can support your day-to-day work and make a real difference to children and young people with SEND.
