Supporting children and young people with Down syndrome in mainstream settings
This session focusses on the successful inclusion and education of pupils with Down Syndrome in mainstream primary and secondary schools. It covers the specific learning profile associated with Down syndrome, the implications this has for teaching pupils with Down syndrome as well as practical strategies and examples of successful education. In addition, the importance of supporting communication and friendships and the effective use of adult support is included.
By the end of this session you should be able to:
• State the strengths and difficulties associated with Down syndrome
• Make practical adaptations required to support access to the curriculum
• Implement a communication support for a pupil with Down syndrome
