Trauma and its Impact; How We Can Adapt Our Teaching to Help Our Pupils

Childhood trauma affects learning and puts pupils at risk of underachieving. A compassionate teacher has a positive effect, but we can do more. Neuroendocrine responses to traumatic events have been theorised to negatively affect frontal regions of the brain causing impairment of executive function, a key cognitive skill. Activities designed to specifically develop children's executive function capabilities can support them in developing the cognitive skills they need for successful learning.
