Since 2019 Stephen has mainly stayed at home looking after his two young children. His eldest son is autistic; and everything Stephen learnt about bringing him up is captured in the forthcoming book The Parent's Guide to SEND, which is due to be published in 2025 by Jessica Kingsley. 

Beforehand, Stephen worked for the British Council, specialising in international education exchange and global learning. He was also chair of governors of a local special school.
