Tara Kierans

Peer Guide, Autism Central

Autism Central is the national peer education programme for families and support networks of autistic people of all ages in England. The programme is delivered by Anna Freud, commissioned by the NHS, and offers families free access to education, coaching, and connection through resources, one-to-one peer support, and group learning events. Peer guides have lived or family experience of autism and supporting autistic family members, they share their knowledge and experience through delivering one-to-ones and group learning to families and support networks.

Tara has managed and coordinated a variety of mental health & social care services including residential care homes, supported housing services and a national mental health helpline. She holds an MA in Consultation and the Organisation. Current work is with individuals, teams and organisations providing a range of services including reflective practice, facilitation, and training. Tara is also a volunteer Listening Post convenor with OPUS (Organisation for Understanding Society).

Finally, as the parent and carer of a young person who, amongst many strengths, has complex needs which traverse learning difficulty, autism, and mental health, her parenting journey has involved advocating, coordination and communication with a variety of services across education, health, and social care; and sustaining herself and family life in the process.
